Artificial Intelligence and Algorithmic Fairness Initiative
Initiated by the the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)
In 2021, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) saw the launch of an agency-wide initiative, by EEOC Chair Charlotte A. Burrows. The effort was to ensure that utilizing software encompassing artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and other evolving technologies in hiring and employment decisions aligns with the federal civil rights laws enforced by the EEOC.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) planned to examine how technology changes employment decisions. The initiative aimed to guide employers, employees, job applicants, and vendors to ensure that technologies are used fairly and consistently with federal equal employment opportunity laws. The stakeholders must ensure the fair and consistent use of technology in employment decisions by following federal equal employment opportunity laws.
As part of the initiative, the EEOC aimed to:
- Issue technical guidance on algorithmic fairness and the employment use of AI
- Identify best practices
- Conduct listening sessions with stakeholders on algorithmic tools in employment and
- Collect information on the adoption and impact of hiring technologies
